Naming the feelings of recovery with Emi

Emi by Empowerful is a YouTube series that turns The Empowerful Project's recovery guides into short animated stories. It speaks to two people in the same room: the one struggling or recovering, and the one who loves them and doesn't know what to say.

☝🏼For those who love them

The Problem

When you're running on empty, even help feels like homework.

Many mental health recovery guides were thorough, but reading a guide takes focus, quiet and energy. Those are exactly what someone in recovery has least of. The people supporting them are stretched thin too, and rarely have an evening to study how to help.

The help needed a lighter way in: something that asks for a few minutes instead of an evening, feels like comfort instead of a lesson, and is easy to pass along to someone who needs it. A short animated series on YouTube does all three.

The Approach

Built a one-person studio that turns written guides into comforting animated stories.

✓ Broke the guides into single-feeling episodes
One feeling per episode, under a minute, with a longer cut for anyone who stays.

✓ Wrote every episode with a framework
Name it, explain why it happens, offer one small shift, then "send this to someone."

✓ Designed Emi's world to feel like comfort
Emi's world combines familiar metaphors with the warmth of childhood cartoons

✓Built an AI production pipeline
Claude (via MCP) turns the guides into scripts, Higgsfield visualizes them, and I direct and edit.

✓Connected every episode to the guides
End screens carry viewers from Short to long-form to guide.

The Impact (Ongoing, updated regularly)

Script to final cut in about 1.5 days, solo.

Work that usually needs a writer, an animator and an editor now runs through one person and a connected AI pipeline. Each new guide becomes a batch of episodes in days, not weeks, so the channel can ship as fast as the audience responds.

Reflection

“Most of my work assumed an audience with time and attention. Designing for people running on empty made me cut everything that wasn't care, and taught me that the warmer the frame, the harder the truth it can carry. AI made 1.5-day episodes possible, but it couldn't decide what a feeling looks like. The tools sped up the making. The judgment stayed mine.”
